Joanne Hindley promoted to Managing Director of Peter Scott Printers, in surprise ceremony with MP

Joanne Hindley has dedicated 26 years to Peter Scott Printers, a commercial lithographic and digital printing business established in 1960, and a traditionally male dominated sector. Joanne started as Office Junior, and has progressed through various roles including Commercial Director. She is so highly valued in the company, this week she was promoted to Managing Director.

Andrew Stephenson MP attended a ceremony at the premises to award her the promotion as a special surprise. Due to COVID-19 rules it wasn’t possible to celebrate as it normally would be, however Andrew was on hand to give her the honour and a bottle of vintage champagne.

One of the largest projects Joanne has undertaken was overseeing the move of premises in April 2020 to Heasandford Industrial Estate in Burnley, following a £200k investment in a £1m factory. The move was planned pre pandemic and PSP had a surge of demand to deal with at that time too, with items such as essential local authority work, including signposting and social distancing signs. It was achieved whilst remaining fully operational and open for business.

The move was complex and involved moving 36 tonne printing presses and equipment. Joanne took the opportunity to engage experts AMRC North West on lean time management and streamlining production layout, to refine operations and reduce lead times. Peter Scott Printers have also invested in new computer-to-plate tech. PSP is also reducing its carbon footprint, and is FSC certified as part of an initiative to have minimal environmental impact.

They now have more capacity, quicker turn-around times and are looking forward to the future, under Joanne’s very capable watch.

Joanne Hindley, Managing Director at PSP said “I’m absolutely delighted and honoured to be given this role, and very proud to be working with such a wonderfully supportive team.”

Andrew Stephenson MP added, “I was delighted to visit Peter Scott Printers following their successful move, and to congratulate Joanne on her much deserved promotion.”

Peter Scott Printers: Training the Next Generation

Top printing company Peter Scott Printers has started an apprenticeship scheme to train up the next generation of printing professionals.

Peter Scott Printers, working with North Lancs Training Group, have created an opportunity for Lancashire's young printing stars of tomorrow. They will be teaching new apprentice Waqas Ahmed all about the many services that Peter Scott Printers offers.

Apprentices with this firm can expect to learn about all aspects of the business. That covers digital and lithographic printing, finishing, cutting, foil blocking and embossing. Mr Ahmed has already been on a forklift training course and bosses at Peter Scott Printers have much more planned for the future.

Chris Sherratt, North Lancs Training Group, commented:

"When we choose an organisation to place an apprentice, we make sure the company has a good reputation and is offering a balanced apprenticeship scheme. Peter Scott Printers is now in its 60th year of trading. That makes them one of the oldest and most experienced printing companies in the North of England. It provides an ideal environment for an apprentice because they can share an enormous amount of knowledge and experience."

Finding staff with experience and knowledge of the commercial printing industry is no easy task in today's world of online communications. That's why the progressive printing firm is taking matters into its own hands.

It makes good business sense in several ways. According to North Lancs Training Group 75% of apprentice employers say it has helped them cut recruitment costs and 89% of apprentice employers say they make their business more productive.

Joanne Hindley, Commercial Director of Peter Scott Printers, commented:

"We're the only printing company in the area providing the full range of services we do. It can be tricky to find staff with the right skills to do the job, even with Lancashire's legendary workforce. It's a very specialised skill set, and not the sort of thing you can learn overnight."

"Starting an apprenticeship programme made a lot of sense. This way we can train up a new member of staff with the precise skills we need. It's great for the apprentice too because they come away with a brand-new career path ahead of them."

Peter Scott Printers are very happy with their new apprentice. Bosses at Peter Scott Printers say they chose Waqas Ahmed because of his enthusiasm and drive. With a positive attitude and a determination to learn from every experience, this young man is setting a great example for future apprentices at this brilliant Burnley printing company.

The Ultimate Burnley FC book is ready, showcasing 136 years of The Clarets

The Ultimate Burnley FC book is ready, showcasing 136 years of The Clarets

  • Collector’s edition book covering Burnley FC players from 1882-2018
  • Compiled by historians, Ray Simpson and Wallace Chadwick, the book is available to pre-order.
  • Peter Scott Printers produced the club’s centenary handbook in 1982 and have been chosen to print ‘The Complete Clarets Collection 1882-2018’
  • The book is available to pre-order until 22nd August 2018

Burnley FC has stood the test of time, to celebrate this historians Ray Simpson and Wallace Chadwick, on behalf of Burnley FC have produced a collector’s edition book that will be produced in a case bound hard backed format. The high-quality publication is for Clarets’ supporters and follows on from the success of the original ‘Clarets Collection’ that covered all post-war players to have appeared up until 1996.

Ray Simpson and Wallace Chadwick, authors and historians, have both got a longstanding relationship with Burnley FC, and with each other. First as friends at school in the 1960’s and now as colleagues, they have shared an interest in researching the history of the club.

Wallace Chadwick said:

“We have worked together since being at school, but this is our first official joint project together. It’s taken us four years to complete, as although there is a lot of information available there were a number of players that it took months to get further information about, such as ones from the 19th century who only played in one game!

No book on Burnley FC has ever been back this far and we are really looking forward to the release. It has over 1000 player profiles and documents every player who has played for the club. Myself and Ray were both brought up in Burnley and I feel honoured to have the opportunity to produce such an important book.”

Peter Scott Printers were established in 1960 and are Burnley’s premier lithographic printers, serving many businesses and Burnley council. They are delighted to have been chosen to print what can only be described as the ultimate Burnley FC player’s book. Due for publication in the Autumn of this year, 'The Complete Clarets Collection 1882-2018' will document the careers of every single player ever to have donned the famous claret and blue of Burnley FC, it is now available to pre-order, but only until 22nd August 2018.

The new 'Complete Clarets Collection 1882-2018' goes much further than the previous, also covering the very beginnings of the club's history up until the outbreak of World War II. The two hundred or so players who have featured for the club since 1996 are also included in the book, including many who have played important roles in the club's remarkable rise back to the top of the English game in recent times.

Ray Simpson said:

“I first became interested in the history of football when I found out Burnley were one of the founding members of The Football League. Myself and Wallace both have a longstanding relationship with the club, in 1987 we did a joint historical column for the club’s match day programme and been doing it ever since! It’s been a pleasure to combine 50 years of work and knowledge, putting it all into one fully comprehensive book.

We immediately knew Peter Scott Printers were the choice for printing the book. We needed good quality, good reputation and of course it’s important to shop local too! We have worked with various members of staff here before and had exceptional service.”

Michael Holehouse, Account Handler at Peter Scott Printers said:

“Here at Peter Scott Printers are no strangers to producing Burnley FC publications. We also produced the club's centenary handbook back in 1982. Some of the company’s longer serving employees can even recall working on that book way back in 1982 and are looking forward to doing another fantastic job on the new publication. Peter Scott Printers was based very close to Turf Moor on Darnley St in those days, but now operates out of modern purpose-built premises on the Billington Road Industrial Estate off Rossendale Road. It was a great honour to be chosen by Ray and Wallace to produce the book, I’m sure it’s going to be a huge hit and I have already pre-ordered my own copy!”

 Ray Simpson added:

“Those who pre-order will have their name in the book and a numbered copy available on the launch night which is Wednesday 24th October - it really is worth pre-ordering! The books will also then be on general sale at the Club shop.

Initially, it will be exclusive to the club shop however we are also urging local retailers to get in touch if they would like to stock it!”

The cost of the book is £30 for subscribers + £5 p&p, with £5 being refunded if collected in person on the launch night, the shelf price will be £32.

Advance subscribers of the book, can have a small personal message printed inside it. Order forms can be obtained from the club shop at Turf Moor or are available from the link below:

Ribbon cutting sets new press rolling at PSP

Long-established Lancashire firm Peter Scott Printers has greatly increased its production capability with a £500,000 investment in a new printing press and a 4,500 sq.ft facility to house it.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the six-colour press’s first print run was held on Monday at the firm’s premises on the Billington Road Industrial Estate in Burnley. Earlier this year Peter Scott Printers (PSP) celebrated 55 years in business since the company was founded in 1960.

Cutting the ribbon was former Burnley FC striker Paul Fletcher MBE, who later became the club’s chief executive and one of Europe’s leading experts on the design and development of football stadiums. He is now one of PSP’s high profile clients as co-founder and director of UCFB – the University and College of Football Business.

He also has printing in his blood, as his father was a printer in Bolton, his mother was involved in printing for Bolton Council and he even ran his own small printing business to supplement his income while an apprentice footballer.

Performing the opening ceremony, Mr Fletcher said: “I am always very supportive of local businesses, especially those that are investing and expanding. UCFB has a great business relationship with Peter Scott Printers so I was delighted to be asked to set the new press rolling, especially with my family connections to the print industry.”

The new Heidelberg B1 six-colour press complements PSP’s existing Heidelberg B1 five-colour and B2 six-colour presses and grows the firm’s turnover capacity by around 50%. PSP produces a comprehensive range of printed materials for clients ranging from well-known blue chip companies to a host of local businesses and organisations.

“This new Heidelberg six-colour press runs 25% faster and more efficiently,” said PSP’s Production Director Tom Gaughan.  “It enables us to meet our customers’ needs by delivering a first class and fast turnaround one-stop-shop printing service.”

PSP’s Commercial Director Joanne Hindley added: “Although we’ve been around since 1960 we make it our business to constantly update machinery to provide our clients with the very best service. Together with highly trained and conscientious staff pushing the business forward, this latest investment marks a new chapter in the Peter Scott Printers story.”

PSP prints high quality prospectuses for UCFB, which began in Burnley in 2011 when Paul Fletcher was chief executive at Turf Moor. As well as its first student campus there, it now has others based at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and a new relationship with Spanish club Real Madrid. UCFB delivers degrees in the operational and business facets of football and other sports and leisure industries.

Local printing business celebrate landmark anniversary

Burnley based company Peter Scott Printers has celebrated its 55th year in business, with a celebration meal for staff past and present.

Over thirty members of staff attended the meal which was hosted by the original founder Peter Scott, who travelled from his home in the north east of Scotland, especially for the occasion.

Peter was presented with a special bottle of whisky by the current directors and staff before recounting tales of old, and congratulated the workforce on the high level of success and stability the business is experiencing through their hard work. He commented: “I cannot thank the current team enough for keeping the proud name of Peter Scott Printers flying high!”

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this thriving business in its 55th year of trading,” commented Tom Gaughan Production Director at Peter Scott Printers. “But even after more than half a century we are not standing still. We are about to invest half a million pounds in new state-of-the-art machinery over the next six months to keep us at the forefront of technology.”

Based on the Billington Road estate, the company currently employs 26 members of staff and produces a wide range of printed materials for many well-known blue chip companies.

“To keep up with demand but keeping our prices competitive, our shift system allows for 800 hours of production time a week and we also consume 10,000 kilos of ink and 1,115 tonnes of paper a year,” added Tom. “Staggering numbers yes, but we have the hunger for continued growth, and with conscientious staff striving to push forward with the imminent investment, we will mark a new chapter in the Peter Scott Printer’s story.”

PSP helps Burnley lead the way

The Rt Hon Michael Fallon, Minister of State for Business & Energy opened the Invest in Burnley event which was recently held at The Royal Society Headquarters, located at the heart of Westminster.

The event was organised by the Burnley Bondholders, Marketing Lancashire and the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership, to attract further investment to Burnley and Lancashire.

As Burnley Bondholders ourselves we were ideally placed to produce printed invites, booklets, leaflets, foiled labels, table cards and menus for the event to ensure that the high quality and professional level of the work available from Burnley’s companies was tangible in attendees’ hands.

Mr Fallon paying tribute to the Burnley Bondholder scheme for its work in securing Burnley the title of Most Enterprising Area in the UK, said:  “Burnley has indeed a strong package to offer investors. It has a proactive and supportive business environment, a good infrastructure and highly skilled workforce. “

“I think that Burnley is leading the way, where more businesses are being created than are closing down. In the 3 years since the beginning of the financial crisis private sector employment in Burnley has risen while it has declined elsewhere in Great Britain. I believe this is a result of the type of partnership and private sector leadership which we see here today, which is essential to driving growth in our local economies. “

Some of the biggest names in real estate and business investment attended the early evening event, including GVA, Morgan Tucker, Barratt London, UKTI, Clifford Chance, DHL, to hear about the transformations underway in Burnley and the range of investment opportunities available in the borough.

Council Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow, said: “The event has generated interest in Burnley which we hope we can turn into real investment. The key, following the event, is to get on the phones to the people we met yesterday to reinforce our message that Burnley is the place to invest.

“We aren’t resting on our laurels following our Most Enterprising Area Award, and events such as this will help spread the word that Burnley is open for business and a place where businesses can confidently invest.”

We’re proud to be a Burnley Bondholder and felt privileged to have been involved in this great showcase of Burnley’s companies and investment opportunities.

Whether you're a start-up looking for business cards to establish yourself, or an international brand with a high volume of glossy brochures to produce, our highly trained and experienced print specialists are the experts in delivering the very best service with rapid lead times and fantastic value, whatever your print project. Burnley printers' new kit is the perfect solution

East Lancashire printing firm Peter Scott Printers have found the perfect solution to produce professionally bound brochures and books quickly and cost-effectively.

The printers, based on Billington Road Industrial Estate in Burnley, have invested in a Duplo DB-280 Perfect Binding machine to offer business customers a speedy and affordable way to turn around books and brochures which require a spine for a professional finish.

The compact new machine, which runs with high energy efficiency, is designed to ‘perfect bind’, or add a structured spine to professional documents. It is especially suited to short run, bespoke and on-demand jobs – typically turning around up to 100 high quality, perfect bound brochures, books, catalogues, pads and prospectuses in an hour.

PSP production director Tom Gaughan added: “The new kit enables us to keep short run work in house to control quality and lead times, offering customers a sophisticated, speedy and cost-effective solution with precision, consistency and superior quality. It’s an added finish we have brought in-house to extend our broad range of services. You name it – we can print it.”

The perfect binding machine was unveiled by company founder Peter Scott, who set up the printing firm in 1960 and retired 20 years ago, but maintains a keen interest in the business.

Peter Scott Printers employs a team of more than 20 print experts, boasting a full brochure and stationery-printing and finishing service up to B1 format with in-house fulfilment service, handling direct mail campaigns of up to 10,000,000 pieces nationally.

PSP helps make Burnley brilliant!

We've been busy helping Burnley Bondholders launch a huge campaign to promote everything that's great about Burnley!

As part of our membership to Burnley Bondholders, we stepped in to print the #BrilliantBurnley leaflet designed to change perceptions of our town.

The leaflet is now being distributed to Bondholder members - a mixture of private companies and public organisations who work together to promote Burnley - who employ more than 4,000 people across the borough.

The eyecatching leaflet features info on all of the town's new projects as well as reminding readers of all of the benefits of living and working in Burnley, including the beautiful countryside that surrounds us and excellent access to motorway networks.

We're proud to be members of Burnley Bondholders and felt honoured to be involved in such a fantastic project!

PSP staff go above and beyond!

Our staff know how to go above and beyond!

Printer Gary Shaw last month completed a 70-mile fun run around Hadrian's Wall in under 12 hours which is just incredible - he came 14th out of a field of 280 competitors!

He's also got a new job moonlighting as a taxi driver with a difference - Gary was asked to pick a friend up at the airport and arrived on a tandem with fancy dress costumes for his friend, returning to Haslingden via three Irish pubs in Manchester, Bury and Rawtenstall.

Gary is no stranger to cycling - in October he will be embarking on a European bike trip that will see him conquer five countries and travel more than 1100 miles. Good luck Gary!

Toni's hard work pays off

A huge congratulations from everyone at PSP goes to our receptionist Toni Prout this week - she has worked her socks off to achieve a degree in business and management at UCLAN's Burnley campus.

Toni embarked on the evening course three years ago, studying modules in ergonomics, bookkeeping, finance, business planning, counselling, marketing, strategic management, change management, motivation, personal and staff development and the history of management thought.

She graduated with a merit and was just 0.7% off a distinction (so close!) - we're all very proud of her, it's a massive achievement and the start of an exciting new chapter in her life.

Well done Toni!

The newest addition to the PSP family is getting on his bike to tempt new customers to take advantage of our unbeatable prices!

Ian Podmore-Dillon has taken on the role of sales account handler and production assistant at Peter Scott Printers, and is using his 26 years in the printing industry to shift business up a gear.

Ian has launched three new promotions to entice new business to the firm – there’s a free mountain bike up for grabs for every new customer who places an order worth more than £1500, while those who order more than £3,000 in print work are set to receive a mini ipad.

He will also be handing out a free disposable BBQs to every new customer who asks Peter Scott Printers to quote on a printing project – however big or small.

Ian said: “Businesses like PSP are constantly striving to come up with new ways to compete with online firms – what many people don’t realise is our prices are just as low as theirs yet we offer extra touches that are absent from the impersonal and faceless service you receive online.

“We proofread everything free of charge and invest in the latest machinery to maintain our professionalism, quality and consistency – plus, we believe we can beat any online price if you give us the chance to quote.”
